Australia New South Wales Government Railways Steam Locomotive D50 Class (superheater version) 2-8-0 =========================================== Version 1.0 - four renumbered versions of the original Original Files are date/time-stamped 01-08-2003 1.00 Renumbered Files are date/time-stamped 06-04-2004 11:00:00 ============================================ Original design and textures by Paul Gausden Email : decapod@highworth.freeuk.com Renumbered by Ian Martin with Paul's permission Email : martinitrains@optusnet.com.au ============================================ NOTE: The remainder of Paul's original readme.txt file continues at the end of the information specific to these renumbered locos. ============================================ Information - Renumbered Locomotives Release April, 2004 ==================================================================== This folder contains renumbered versions of Paul Gausden's superb NSWGR D50. In addition to changing the numbers, some locos have been provided with brass-coloured cabside numbers and, as in the prototypes all carry a white "+" on the front buffer beams. This was an indication that these engines were superheated. Also, the original tender friction figures have been modified using Joe Realmuto's fcalc 1.0. The four renumbered engines have been initially supplied to be used with Don Martin's activities for Peter Newell's route "Coals to Newcastle", but of course they can be used with any other activity or route. ==================================================================== A. INSTALLATION To allow the included locomotives to be used in existing activities, simply place this folder (AU_NSWGR_D50's) "as is" in the TRAIN SIMULATOR> TRAINS > TRAINSET folder. This will be done automatically by double clicking on the "nswd50extrav1.exe" file when downloaded and following the instructions. To run the locos independent of those activities you will need to make up consists using the included engines before they are available. Note that in order to get the proper sounds you must have installed the "2 Cylinder Generic Sound Set" by Stuart Williamson (from www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/files/2cSndSetV1-1.ZIP or from from uktrainsim.com) and, as this locomotive aliases to the C30 cab from the C30 locomotive 4-6-4T #3112 available from the Steam4me site, this locomotive too must be installed for these D50 locos to work. If you have already installed Paul Gausden's original D50 you have most likely already installed these additional files as well. (For additional information see the original readme later.) ==================================================================== B. THE LOCOMOTIVES All D50's had brass cabside numbers. However D50's based at Port Waratah in Newcastle frequently had their brass cabside numbers painted over in white. These engines were used to haul coal trains. Presumably the white numbers were easier to read in the grimy conditions, particularly when light levels were low. Two locomotives which were allocated to Port Waratah throughout the 1950's have been included. These are 5032 and 5236. D50's based at Broadmeadow in Newcastle and Enfield in Sydney were mainly used to haul freight. Their brass cabside numbers tended to be cleaned infrequently and so were usually rather dull and dirty. One locomotive which was allocated to Broadmeadow throughout the 1950's, 5133, is included, along with one locomotive, 5222, allocated to Enfield during the same period. The Laird crosshead, as correctly depicted in Paul Gausden's original 5270, has been retained in all of these models. Not all of the depicted locos carried this crosshead in real life, but to refashion the crosshead would have entailed a fundamental modification of the original shape which was beyond the scope of the present project. ==================================================================== C. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Paul Gausden for giving his permission for the renumbering, Don Martin for his almost continuous stream of essential information, suggestions and helpful evaluations, and also Ray Cross for his feedback. Model details 2. Installation Notes 3. Prototype Notes 4. Acknowledgements 5. Copyright, Distribution and Terms of Use ======================================= 1. Model Details ---------------- 3D Model created with Amabilis 3D Canvas Pro utilising plug-ins designed by Paul Gausden himself. Textures created with Micrografix Picture Publisher 7. This model is for your personal use only, and may not be sold or distributed in any way without the creator's permission. The Engine is 6122 polys up to 700m and becomes a small box up to 2000m (I had trouble with the optimised 6 LOD export). The Tender is 1828 polys up to 100m, 1300 polys up to 300m and 1000 to 500m and less over that. This helps make this a good model for AI work. The crew are just under 600 polys, but should dissappear over 150m. The coal is 80 polys and is animated to drop by 1.5m when the tender is empty. The rod and piston animation uses smooth 16 frames and was accurately computed automatically by Paul's Rod Animator plugin for 3D Canvas. ======================================== 2. Installation Notes ---------------------- This locomotive sounds best using the wonderful "2 Cylinder Generic Sound Set" by Stuart Williamson and has therefore been set up with these sounds in mind. You can download these sounds from www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/files/2cSndSetV1-1.ZIP or from from uktrainsim.com. These sounds come with an installer to make life as simple as possible. This locomotive aliases to the C30 cab from the C30 locomotive 4-6-4T #3112 available from the Steam4me site. This must be installed for this D50 loco to work. To design consists of your own, use the Consist Editor. A tutorial for this may be found at http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/ ============================================ 3. Prototype Notes -------------------- The 280 locomotives of this class were designed by the NSWGR, designated the T-524 class and constructed in the period 1896-1916 by Beyer Peacock, North British Loco, Neilsen Reid & Co, Clyde Engineeering and Dubs & Co. The first 205 were saturated engines, whilst the final 47 were fitted with superheaters: many were rebuilt during shopping. The class was renamed the D50 class in 1924. Many were withdrawn in the 30s (many were used in the testing of Sydney Harbour bridge) and cut up for scrap for the war effort in 1939. The Commonwealth Railways also ordered 8 locos of this design in 1916 from North British - these became the K class, numbered 27-34. The British Railway Operating Division (ROD) also took ten NSWGR locos under construction by North British and used them in war service in France as 701-710. After WW1, these were taken up by the Belgian Railways. The same basic design was also used by Beyer Peacock in 1912 to build 14 tank locos for the South Maitland Railways. By 1964, only 114 engines were left and were then only used for country yard work and for the Newcastle coal traffic. Last engine in service was saturated 5069 at Port Waratah in Jan 1973. Preserved locos include 5069 (saturated) and 5132 (superheated) at Dorrigo, 5096 (saturated - also first loco built by Clyde) at Thirlmere and 5112 (saturated) at Bathurst.
