Model Details Original 3D model of Alco RS-3 locomotive - by John Fowlis - Email: jafowlis@shaw.ca Repaints, add-ons, upgrades and additional locos - by Brian Bere-Streeter John Fowlis originally created a nice Alco RS-3 locomotive, originally for followers of North American railways. Although the model is only an RS-3 BO-BO and not a true RSC-3 A1A-A1A, it lends itself to a fair representation of a NSWGR Class 40, subject to the Special Notes below. Thank you John - for allowing me to repaint your model for more variety for NSWGR enthusiasts. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX SPECIAL NOTE: These models are NOT a true representation of the NSWGR Class 40. There are no direct equivalent locomotives currently available in the MSTS file libraries. This RS-3 used as a base model, is the closest that I could find that is suitable for a reasonable attempt at modelling a Class 40. Because the new models are repaints of an existing 3D model, the models included here have the following basic detail errors that were not fitted to NSWGR Class 40’s. Class 40’s did not have:- - side and end handrails were not fitted to the running plate - the cab profile is slightly different – 40’s tapered inwards from the waist to the cantrail - the end pilots and steps were completely different – 40’s had buffer beams and buffers - the horns were on the top of the engine hood and not the cab roof, no bell was fitted - the RS-3 was a 4 axle BO-BO, while the 40’s (based on an RSC-3) were 6 axle A1A-A1A’s – the bogie sideframe texture is shown as a 3-axle, but the model has only 2 axles on each bogie – the absence of the middle axle and wheels is not readily noticeable when running through landscaped terrain in MSTS. - There are a few other minor variations from NSWGR practise. As a concession to the differences between the base RS-3 MSTS model used, and the real RSC-3 on which the NSW Class 40 is based, an add-on detail pack has been included, using the FreightAnim feature to ‘slot-over’ the top of the original RS-3 models – using this approach allows a moderately more realistic NSWGR Class 40, albeit with the detail errors as listed above. If you are prepared to accept these differences, then you will be able to run the locomotives and their attendant passenger and goods trains in MSTS with a REASONABLE attempt at authentic appearance. If you are not prepared to accept these differences, then do not download and install the model. You could wait until such time as someone creates an accurate model of a Class 40 (maybe never), or alternatively enjoy using these representational models while MSTS still has some life left in it!!! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX These new locos came about, because of a need to create authentic train formations for use on the Microsoft Train Simulator route - 'Coals to Newcastle' - by Peter Newell. To allow the creation of authentic train formations the following locos were added: - 4009 – Green livery – short hood leading - 4004 – Green livery – long hood leading - 4012 – Indian Red livery – short hood leading - 4020 – Indian Red livery – long hood leading - 4001 – Royal Blue livery – short hood leading - 4002 – Royal Blue livery – long hood leading Each of these locomotives can be used as individual locomotives, in either short hood leading or long hood leading formations, or can be run in paired formation with the long hoods facing together. Initially the 40 class were supplied in Green livery – 4001 and 4002 were repainted in Royal Blue for use with the Royal Train on the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1954 – photo evidence shows 4002 (at least) still in Royal Blue in late 1957 – subsequently all were repainted in Indian Red. The class remained in general service until the late 60’s-early 70’s when they were traded to A.E.Goodwin for new Class 442 locomotives. Two of the units, 4002 and 4006, were sold to Cliffs Robe River Iron Associates for working in the north-west of Western Australian, and were preserved locally at the end of their life in 1980. Of the original locomotives, 4001, has been preserved at the NSWRTM at Thirlmere. Each of the six new locomotives, were regular performers on the ‘Short North’ from Sydney to Newcastle and to the North-West. The twenty Class 40’s were the first main line diesel-electric locomotives to be used by NSWGR. They were supplied by the Canadian Division of Alco using a basically standard RSC-3 model, but modified in accordance with NSWGR requirements. Initially they were meant for use on express goods and perishables trains, but the locomotive department soon found the lack of a centre powered axle in the 6-wheel A1A-A1A bogies restricted their tractive effort on heavy goods trains. As a result the 40’s were relegated to lighter passenger service, and were used on many of the principal express and mail trains for many years, until ever increasing quantities of newer 44 Class diesels eventually took over their principal passenger express roles, and the 40’s were downgraded to lesser passenger and goods work for the remainder of their lives. Generally the 40’s were worked with the short hood leading – unless the absence of a convenient turntable prevented them being turned, they were rarely worked long hood leading. For many trains they were often worked in pairs with the long hoods facing together towards the centre. Details of the authentic prototype workings of diesel-electric hauled trains over the sections of line represented by the CTN route, can be found in the document “Working Timetable – North” available for download on the CTN website. Diesel hauled trains were marked with an asterisk * at the top of the timetable column describing that train. A perusal of the Passenger Train Formations document and the Working Timetable shows that many trains over the Short North on Sundays had diesel- electric locomotives substituted for the normal steam hauled equivalent in the Monday-Friday (and Saturday) timetables. Unfortunately, the detail of which specific class of diesel was used on a particular train is not available. Photographic evidence suggests that the 42 class diesels were regularly used only on the No 1 and No 2 Brisbane Limited (and occasionally on No 3 and No 4), all other express and mail trains, generally used a 40 class. The 41 class were used only on shunting and local trip transfer goods workings. The class 43 diesels were mainly used on the main Western and Southern lines and were rarely seen on the Short North. As the years went by, increasing numbers of 44 class could be seen all over the Short North, particularly after the electrification to Gosford was completed. Installation Notes Double click on the self installing EXE file and follow the instructions. The models will be automatically installed into a folder called <<< AU_nsw40 >>> YOU WILL NEED TO ALSO INSTALL the following Cabview and Sound sets:- CABVIEW – Alco DL531/541 SOUND – 48/830 Class Alco (DL531) – also known as Alco S4 soundset Please note the S4 soundset aliases also to the default GP-38 soundset The required Cabview and Soundset can be downloaded from the Steam4me website at:- http://steam4me.railpage.org.au/trainsim/ - look under Permanent Content at the right side. These Cabviews and Sounsets will automatically install in ‘common’ folders in the MSTS master Trainsets folder, and the the new Class 40 locomotives will automatically link into them. You will need to create either a new consist to use these locomotives, or add them to an existing consist. Consists are made, or edited, using MSTS Activity Editor or Carlos Gomes’s ConBuilder. Consists have been included for each locomotive only as a Light Engine, just to get you started. Visit http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim for a tutorial in creating a consist. =========================================== 3.
