Model Details Original 3D model of 46 class electric locomotive - by Paul Woozley - Email: bve_fan@hotmail.com Repaints, add-ons, upgrades and additional locos - by Brian Bere-Streeter Paul Woozley originally created an excellent 46 class electric locomotive No 4605. Thank you Paul - for allowing me to repaint your model for more variety for NSWGR enthusiasts. These new locos came about, because of a need to create authentic train formations for use on the Microsoft Train Simulator route - 'Coals to Newcastle' - by Peter Newell. To allow the creation of authentic train formations the following locos were added: - 4609 – later livery as per Paul’s original model - 4617 – early livery as built - 4623 – early livery as built The new models have revised equipment room side windows and ventilation grills, revised wiper locations, and the locos in the early livery are minus the cab ‘eyebrow’ as per photographs of locomotives in their original condition as built. These models are based on an upgrade to Paul’s original 46 Class locomotive, and now have semi-transparent windows and basic cab detail included. However, Paul’s upgraded shape file, now also includes rear view mirrors on cab sides, which were not fitted when in the early livery. Shape file and texturing limitations result in the mirrors being retained on the locomotives repainted in early livery. These models are for your personal use only, and may not be sold or distributed in any way without the original creator's permissions. Prototype Notes: Designed and built by Metropolitan Vickers Ltd. In England, these 40 locomotives were used for hauling passenger and goods trains over the severely-graded 1,500 volts D.C. electrified sections between Sydney and Gosford, and Sydney and Lithgow. 4601 entered service in June 1956, and the last, 4640, by the end of 1958. Buffing gear and couplers are attached to the bogie frames, which are connected by a specially designed draw-gear unit – the haulage stresses being confined to the bogies - this also improves the bogie tracking on the curves. The locomotive body is therefore used only to house the driving cabs, electrical control and braking equipment. The original specifications called for locomotives capable of hauling 400 tons on a continuous grade of 1 in 33 at 35mph. Re-generative braking was provided to assist in holding trains on the long steep descents of the Blue Mountains, the Short North line over the Northern suburbs of Sydney, the Cowan Bank and Hawkesbury River sections. The first stage of the northern extension of the electrified track, from Hornsby to Cowan, was opened in November 1958, permitting suburban electric services to Cowan. When the next electrified section between Cowan and Hawkesbury River was opened in April 1959, class 46 electric locomotives took over the role of banking Up trains from Hawkesbury River to Cowan, replacing the standard goods locomotives that previously performed these duties. Electric haulage of passenger and goods trains was extended fully to Gosford on 23rd January 1960. The class remained intact until January 1977, when 4620 was destroyed in the horrific Granville accident which claimed the lives of 83 passengers. Once the more modern Commonwealth Engineering class 85’s (10 built) started to enter service in 1979, followed by the class 86’s (50 built) in 1982, the class 46 locomotives were progressively withdrawn from service and stored – the last unit being removed from service in January 1996. Footnote: During the late 1970’s, I was employed by Commonwealth Engineering for three years, as an Electrical Design Draftsman, and in that capacity was heavily involved with the electrical design of the Class 80 diesels, and the class 85 electric locomotives (as well as the S-sets and the V-sets suburban and interurban double-deck passenger stock). Unfortunately, I never saw the completion of the class 80’s and class 85’s, as I left Comeng’s employ, for other greener pastures, some six months or so before the first locomotives were completed. Not long afterwards, I moved permanently to Queensland, so, I have never had the benefit of seeing an 80 or 85 Class locomotive ‘in-the-flesh’. =========================================== 2. Installation Notes You MUST HAVE the original 46 Class locomotive file set by Paul Woozley installed in accordance with his installation notes. Double click on the self installing EXE file and follow the instructions. The models will be automatically installed into a folder called <<< AU_nsw46class >>> You will need to create either a new consist to use these locomotives, or add them to an existing consist. Consists are made, or edited, using MSTS Activity Editor or Carlos Gomes’s ConBuilder. Consists have been included for each locomotive only as a Light Engine, just to get you started. You will need to move them to the << Consists >> folder under the Trains folder in MSTS. Visit http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim for a tutorial in creating a consist. =========================================== 3.
