Model Details Original 3D models of L-Type coaches - by Brian Bere-Streeter These new coaches came about, because of a need to create authentic sets of coaches for use on the Microsoft Train Simulator route - 'Coals to Newcastle' - by Peter Newell. To allow the formation of authentic sets of coaches the following coaches were created: BL – all first FL – all second RFL – buffet/second HFL – second brake * HFL-Rev * Version 2 now includes: All carriages totally rebuilt – upgraded textures, improved bogies and wheels, handrails, footsteps, roof vents, screw couplers and brake pipes added. * The cars containing a brake van section (the HFL) are now supplied in both Normal and Reverse versions for placing at the front of the train next to the locomotive and/or at the rear of the train. This is so the wheels and bogies will have the correct rotation, relative to the train direction. Also brake vans at the rear of the train will have illuminated tail-lights. NOTE: Due to the release of a Commercial set of L-Type coaches by Team-Alco, these coaches have not been upgraded as far as other Version 2 coaches. The time involved to make transparent windows and a custom interior for these coach types, does not warrant the time expended, when a commercial set of coaches of these types are available elsewhere. However, to complement the Indian Red liveried set, the faded Tuscan and Russet liveried set, the Blue and Cream liveried set, and Green and Cream liveried set supplied by Team-Alco, these cars have been re-liveried in Tuscan and Russet livery. Version 3 now includes: A full set of cars in the Bright Red and Cream livery used during 1929-1934, on the fore-runner of the Sydney-Newcastle Express. This set would look quite superb behind the Maroon Class 32 locomotive 3277 available from the CTN downloads area. These models are for your personal use only, and may not be sold or distributed in any way without the original creator's permissions. =========================================== 2. Installation Notes Double click on the self installing EXE file and follow the instructions. The models will be automatically installed into a folder called << AU_nsw-L-Type >> Note: You will also need the “Coals to Newcastle” Passenger Carriage sounds installed as well. If you are adding these new Version 3 cars to an existing Version 1 or Version 2 installation, it is recommended that you totally delete all existing files in the AU_nsw-L-Type folder, as the new files are completely different. As the HFL cars are now only available in Normal or Reverse versions, it is recommended that you check through ALL of your existing Consists and change any reference to HFL to HFL or HFL-Rev as appropriate. A typical Consist using these coaches has been created for you to use - copy the file ending in xxxx.CON into the Consists folder under the TRAINS folder. Consists supplied include: Indian Red livery – set 81 – HFL, BL, BL, RFL, FL, HFL Please note - the Consists as supplied use the 32 Class 4-6-0 3243 engine by Gavin Woolf - use the Activity Editor to substitute any appropriate NSWGR locomotive to suit - of those types currently available for MSTS, the C32 class, and the C35 class all worked these cars during the time period. =========================================== 3. Historical Notes The L-Type centre aisle cars were constructed between 1929 and 1940, a total of 84 cars of BL, FL, RFL, and HFL type were built, all as conversions from older 1890 type Express cars. They were built from existing cars with a basic Mansard style roof shape. The original underframe and roof were retained, with new sides, ends and interiors. These coaches had a long and varied life - initially they were designed to service the medium distance country train workings, and provided Buffet facilities for all passengers via interconnecting gangways between cars. The brake seconds at the outer ends of the set had ‘blind ends’, so if any extra cars were attached, they were not able to access the buffet facilities. These L-Type centre aisle cars were worked generally as sets, set 80 was broken up in 1957 and set 86 in 1963, the remainder lasted in one form or another until the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. All sets comprised: HFL, BL, BL, RFL, FL, HFL and were coded as CUB sets. Set 80 – Newcastle express services 1929-1934 then general service – originally in Red and Cream livery, repainted Tuscan and Russet 1937, set broken up 1957 Set 81 – Newcastle express services 1930-1934 then general service – originally in Red and Cream livery, repainted Tuscan and Russet 1937 Set 82 – South Coast Daylight Express 1930-1938 then general service – originally in Green and Cream livery, repainted Tuscan and Russet 1948 Set 83 – Wollongong services No135/66 1930-1938 and during WW2 then general service – Tuscan and Russet livery Set 84 – general service – Tuscan and Russet livery Set 85 – general service – Tuscan and Russet livery Set 86 – The Caves Express 1933-1936 then general service– originally in Blue and Cream livery, repainted Tuscan and Russet 1939, set broken up 1963 Prototype information for these models has been researched from the following sources: " Coaching Stock of the NSW Railways - Volumes 1 and 2 ", Cooke, Estell, Seckold and Beckhaus, Eveleigh Press, 1999 and 2003 " Time of the Passenger Train - First (and Second, and Third) Division" , Preston, Eveleigh Press, 2003 (and 2004, and 2006) =========================================== 4.
