Model Details Original 3D models of N-Type coaches - by Brian Bere-Streeter These new coaches came about, because of a need to create authentic sets of coaches for use on the Microsoft Train Simulator route - 'Coals to Newcastle' - by Peter Newell. To allow the formation of authentic sets of coaches the following coaches were created: BN – all first FN – all second RFN – buffet/second HFN – second brake * Version 2 now includes: One set of coaches in Tuscan and Russet livery, and One set of coaches in Indian Red livery All carriages totally rebuilt – upgraded textures, see-through windows and interiors, improved bogies and wheels, handrails, footsteps, roof vents, screw couplers and brake pipes added. * The cars containing a brake van section (the HFN) are now supplied in both Front and Rear versions for placing at the front of the train next to the locomotive and/or at the rear of the train. This is so the wheels and bogies will have the correct rotation, relative to the train direction. Also brake vans at the rear of the train will have illuminated tail-lights Version 3 now includes: One set of coaches in Venetian Red and Cream livery - as used on the Newcastle Express services in the early years of WW2, before the construction of the 38 Class and the HUB sets – these services were normally hauled by Class 36 locomotives. A sample Consist is provided, however this uses a 36 Class locomotive from the Team-Alco commercial pack – if you do not have the T-A 36 Class pack, I would recommend substituting one of the freeware 35 Class locomotives instead. These models are for your personal use only, and may not be sold or distributed in any way without the original creator's permissions. =========================================== 2. Installation Notes Create a new folder called << AU_nsw-N-Type >> Unzip the files into a temporary folder, then copy and paste all of the files straight into the new N-Type folder (check the name to be sure). If you are adding these new Version 3 cars to an existing Version 1 or Version 2 installation, it is recommended that you totally delete all existing files in the AU_nsw-N-Type folder, as the new files are completely different. As the HFN cars are now only available in Front or Rear versions, it is recommended that you check through ALL of your existing Consists and change any reference to HFN to HFN-Front or HFN-Rear as appropriate. A typical Consist using these coaches has been created for you to use - copy the file ending in xxxx.CON into the Consists folder under the TRAINS folder. Consists supplied include: Tuscan and Russet livery – NAB – 6c – HFN, FN, RFN, BN, BN, HFN NIB – 7c – HFN, FN, RFN, BN, BN, FN, HFN NOB – 5c – HFN, FN, BN, BN, HFN NUB – 6c – HFN, FN, FN, BN, BN, HFN Please note - the Consists as supplied use the 35 Class 4-6-0 3526 engine by Paul Gausden - use the Activity Editor to substitute any appropriate NSWGR locomotive to suit - of those types currently available for MSTS, the C32 class, the C35 class and the C38 class all worked these cars during the time period. =========================================== 3. Historical Notes The N-Type corridor cars were constructed between 1938 and 1939, a total of 35 cars of BN, FN, HFN, and RFN type were built, all as new construction. They were the last of the non air-conditioned stock, but had a pressure ventilation system installed. This proved to be a problem in the hot summers when inadequate cool air supply heated the interiors of the cars, so additional roof ventilators and lift-up windows were fitted. A second contract for 25 extra cars was issued in 1943, but these were modified slightly, and built as the HUB sets, the first passenger stock with air-conditioning. These coaches had a long and varied life - initially they were designed to service the principal medium distance country train workings, and provided Buffet facilities for all passengers via interconnecting gangways between cars. The brake seconds at the outer ends of the set had connecting gangways, so if any extra corridor cars were attached, they were able to access the buffet facilities. These N-Type corridor cars were worked generally as sets. As the sets got older during the 60’s, carriages were taken out of the sets and converted to other types, the remainder of the cars lasted until the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Prototype information for these models has been researched from the following sources: " Coaching Stock of the NSW Railways - Volumes 1 and 2 ", Cooke, Estell, Seckold and Beckhaus, Eveleigh Press, 1999 and 2003 " Time of the Passenger Train - First (and Second, and Third) Division" , Preston, Eveleigh Press, 2003 (and 2004, and 2006) =========================================== 4.
