Model Details Original 3D model of RVR Kitson Class locomotives - by Brian Bere-Streeter These new locos came about, because of a need to create authentic train formations for use on the Microsoft Train Simulator route - 'Coals to Newcastle' - by Peter Newell. This is my second venture into building new STEAM locomotives from scratch. They may not be the most detailed or totally accurate, but in the absence of other better models, I hope you enjoy running them on your RVR routes in MSTS – at least it gives a bit more variety and authenticity to your train workings. To allow the creation of authentic train formations the following locos were added: - 10 - “Richmond Main” - 9 – “Pelaw Main” These models typically represent the locos in the 50’s and 60’s condition. These models are for your personal use only, and may not be sold or distributed in any way without the original creator's permissions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT’S NEW IN VERSION 2.0 Extensive revisions and improvements to texture files. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prototype Notes: The first of the Kitson class 2-8-2T locomotives was originally built for the J. & A. Brown Railway by Kitson and Company in 1908. This was the beginning of a series of new locomotives to replace the ex-Mersey Railway 0-6-4Ts, imported second-hand in 1907, which proved to be generally unsuitable for this type of work. Brown was thereafter very careful with his locomotive purchasing, so only ordered one loco, until such time that the design was proven to be suitable for his railways. In 1910 two further locos of the same type were ordered. The first loco delivered was numbered 9 and named “Pelaw Main, the second delivery of locos was numbered 10 “Richmond Main” and 11 “Hexham”. The three Kitsons handled the bulk of the coal traffic, until the arrival of the ROD 2-8-0s in the late 1920s, and then were relegated to passenger workings for the next twenty years or so. By the mid-40s the RODS started to take over passenger work as well, so the Kitsons were returned to coal and general service workings. No 11 was withdrawn in 1949, and sat ‘in store’ at the ‘fodder shed’ until officially scrapped in 1968. No 9 and 10 were overhauled in the mid-50’s and continued coal haulage until the Pelaw main (1961) and Richmond main (1967) collieries were closed – the locomotives were then transferred to Hexham and put into store. As the RODs were progressively condemned with life-expired boilers, the two Kitsons were overhauled once again and pressed into general service for a few more years, working their last years over the last remaining section of the once vast J. & A. brown empire, between Hexham and Stockrington Colliery. No 10 finally was taken out of service in 1976 and No 9 in 1979 – they were considered no longer serviceable, after the transfer of several SMR 10 class locomotives from the former South Maitland Railways. When the Richmond Vale railway closed entirely on 22nd September 1987, the two remaining Kitsons and the SMR 10 class locomotives passed into the hands of various preservation societies around 1982. Both locos (9 and 10) have been preserved at the current day Richmond Vale Railway run by the Richmond Vale Preservation Society. Installation Notes Double click on the self installing EXE file and follow the instructions. The models will be automatically installed into a folder called <<< AU_nsw-RVR-Kitson-10 >>> YOU WILL NEED TO ALSO INSTALL the following Cabview and Sound sets:- CABVIEW – cabview is aliased to Joseph Spinella’s excellent C30 class tank engine cab SOUND – sound is aliased to Paul Gausden’s excellent D50 engine sounds. CREW - the loco crew is provided by Paul Gausden These Cabviews and Soundsets MUST BE installed in the MSTS master Trainsets folder, and the new RVR Kitson locomotives will automatically link into them. You will need to create either a new consist to use these locomotives, or add them to an existing consist. Consists are made, or edited, using MSTS Activity Editor or Carlos Gomes’s ConBuilder. Consists have been included for each locomotive only as a Light Engine, just to get you started. Visit http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim for a tutorial in creating a consist. =========================================== 3.
