Model Details Original 3D models of NSW Weedkilling Train - by Brian Bere-Streeter These new wagons came about, because of a need to create authentic train formations for use on the Microsoft Train Simulator route - 'Coals to Newcastle' - by Peter Newell. New models were created for: NSWGR 4-wheel Weed Killer Tank Having spent some considerable time repainting others models, this is another venture into building new rolling stock from scratch. They may not be the most detailed or totally accurate, but in the absence of other better models, I hope you enjoy running them on your NSW routes in MSTS – at least it gives a bit more variety and authenticity to your passenger and goods train workings. These models are for your personal use only, and may not be sold or distributed in any way without the original creator's permissions. =========================================== 2. Installation Notes The Weedkilling Train files are intended as an add-on to the NSW Ballast Train files, and are to be placed in the same folder. You should already have an existing folder called << AU_nswBallastTrain >> Double click on the self installing EXE file and follow the instructions. The models will be automatically installed into a folder called << AU_nswBallastTrain >> Sample consists for a typical weed killing train. You will need to copy the “con” file from the rolling stock folder into the <> folder. Please note - the Consist as supplied uses the C32 Class 4-6-0 engines by Gavin Woolf - use the Activity Editor to substitute any appropriate NSWGR locomotive to suit. The supplied consist also uses my EHO passenger brake van and LHG goods brake van that is available from the CTN website downloads. You will need to create either a new consist to use these wagons, or add them to an existing consist. Consists are made, or edited, using MSTS Activity Editor or Carlos Gomes’s ConBuilder. =========================================== 3. Historical Notes NSWGR had two basic types of Weedkilling trains: - In urban areas generally, and where work trips were relatively short, a train with a small 4-wheel tank was used. The 4-wheel tanks dated from 1955, as a conversion from old 2,500 gallon oil tank wagons. There were 7 tanks in use by 1961. Sometimes when used in outlying areas where water was not readily available, additional plain water only tanks were added to maintain water supply to the spray tanker without having to return to selected locations to refill the poison tank. - In country areas generally, and where work trips were much longer, a train with a large capacity bogie D-Tank was used. The bogie tanks dated from around 1959, as conversions from 7,000 gallon bogie water ‘gins’ that were becoming surplus due to dieselisation in the western part of NSW. An operator’s control cabin was mounted at one end, so the tank was cut back to a capacity of 6,500 gallons. When trips over longer runs of up to 100 miles were required, additional 7,000 gallon bogie water tankers were added to increase the total water capacity. After 1968, some old ‘turret’ type goods locomotive tenders were converted to auxiliary water tanks, permanently coupled in pairs ‘front-to-front’, this gave an extra capacity of around 10,000 gallons per set. Until 1977 each separate Way and Works division ran its own weed control program. During the 80’s the old spray tankers were superseded by hi-rail road-rail vehicles with spray tanks, pumps and adjustable booms. Weedkilling trains were generally run at slow speeds of around 8-20 mph maximum: this was to help prevent the spray being blown beyond the immediate track areas, with consequent waste. As the original Weedkiller train was intended to be required for the CTN route, I have only attempted to model the train using the 4-wheel tank – the larger bogie tanks were only introduced in a period that is generally outside the era that the CTN route depicts. If enough interest is generated, I may (not necessarily will) issue an updated pack containing the bogie tank, at a future date. Prototype information for these models has been researched from the following sources: “A Brief History of On-Track Weed Control on the NSW SRA during the Steam Era”, Longworth, ARHS Bulletin, April 1996 “The Fifties – Decade of Change”, Stormont, NSWRTM, 1992 " Day of the Goods Train" , Preston, Eveleigh Press, 2002 “Railway Freight Wagons of New South Wales”, Beckhaus, SCR Publications, 1970 =========================================== 4.
